ChatGPT Ads Just Shipped a Shopify App That Talks Back

OpenAI gave ChatGPT ads a Shopify app, a HubSpot integration, and AI agents that chat with shoppers. Here's what's live today and what's still a pilot.

Yesterday OpenAI gave ChatGPT ads two things they didn't have before: a Shopify app and a voice. Click a sponsored post inside ChatGPT now, and instead of landing on a product page, you can open a labeled conversation with that business's own AI agent, right inside the chat.

That's the flashy part. The part that actually matters if you sell things online is two paragraphs down in OpenAI's own announcement: a native ChatGPT Ads app in the Shopify App Store, live today for US merchants, with your product catalog already wired in through Shopify Catalog.

We've written about ChatGPT Ads twice this year: once when the self-serve pilot opened, once when it launched across Europe. Both times, we flagged a beta feature called the "Agent" ad format and said it wasn't generally available yet. Five weeks later, it has a name, two named test advertisers, and a release date. Here's what changed and what's still marketing copy.

The core idea: a user sees an ad in ChatGPT, clicks it, and gets offered a conversation with a business-sponsored agent instead of a landing page. They can ask what they actually want to know, get answers, and follow a link to the business's site when they're ready. OpenAI is explicit that the exchange is "clearly labeled" and kept separate from the user's original conversation and from ChatGPT's own independent answers.

2Named pilot advertisers so far: Angi and Wayfair

Only two advertisers are named so far, and the split is instructive. Angi confirmed its participation directly, building a sponsored agent that can move a homeowner from "my faucet is leaking" straight into Angi's pro-matching flow. Wayfair is running its own pilot at limited scale, according to reporting from Search Engine Roundtable, with guardrails around product accuracy and handoff to human support.

Our AI-first strategy is simple: make it easier for homeowners to connect with and hire the right pro for their project.

Both categories share something: high-consideration purchases where a shopper has genuine follow-up questions before they buy or book. A dining table's dimensions. Whether a contractor covers your zip code. That's a real use case for a conversational ad. It also means this isn't built yet for a $19 impulse buy, and OpenAI hasn't said when, or whether, it opens past a handful of advertisers.

The Shopify app is the part you can actually use today

While Sponsored Agents stay gated, the Shopify integration is live and open to any eligible US merchant right now. Install the free app from the Shopify App Store, connect it, and your existing product catalog feeds straight into campaign creation through Shopify Catalog. You're not rebuilding a feed or exporting a CSV to a third-party tool. That's the entire pitch: the ad channel goes where your admin already is, instead of asking you to go where the ad channel is.

The HubSpot side works the same way for businesses that live in a CRM instead of a storefront: connect a ChatGPT Ads account, build and track campaigns, and follow up on leads inside HubSpot using existing customer context. Shopify gets ecommerce, HubSpot gets pipeline. OpenAI calls them its first ecommerce and CRM partners, which tells you this is the start of a partner strategy, not a one-off integration.

If international is where your store sells, mark September 23 on the calendar. That's when the app extends to every market where ChatGPT Ads already runs, per OpenAI's own timeline, which still doesn't cover every country ChatGPT operates in. We covered the market-access gap in detail when ChatGPT Ads opened across the EU in August, and the same caveat applies here: check whether your specific market has ad access before you build a campaign around a channel you can't actually buy into yet.

OpenAI also handed advertisers an AI copywriter, and that's the part worth being skeptical of

Ads Manager now drafts headline and imagery suggestions based on your landing page and campaign goal. There's an opt-in feature that rewrites your existing ad copy to match the tone of whatever conversation it's inserted into, and auto-translates it for the user's language. Advertisers can also manage campaigns by typing plain-language prompts directly into ChatGPT instead of clicking through a dashboard.

None of that is unique to OpenAI. Meta shipped a similar AI ad assistant in August that reads your account and grades your creative, with the same built-in tension: the assistant recommending how to spend more on the platform also profits when you spend more on the platform. ChatGPT's version has the identical structure. An AI trained to write ad copy that performs well on ChatGPT's own ad surface is not a neutral copywriter, even when the suggestions are genuinely useful.

The practical risk isn't that the AI writes bad copy. It's that AI-suggested copy and an AI-run Sponsored Agent can drift from what your business actually offers if nobody's checking. A Sponsored Agent answering "does this fit a small apartment" needs an accurate product answer, not a plausible one, and OpenAI's own framing puts the responsibility for that squarely on the advertiser, not the platform.

Skip this quarter if your buyer isn't on a free ChatGPT account

One fact hasn't changed since our first ChatGPT Ads post: ads and Sponsored Agents only show to Free and Go tier users. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education subscribers still see none of it, by OpenAI's own design. That matters more here than it did for a static banner ad, because a Sponsored Agent is a bigger production lift than a headline and an image. If your buyer is a professional using a paid ChatGPT seat at work, which is a real chunk of B2B software and services buyers by now, none of what launched this week reaches them yet. Ecommerce brands selling to consumers are the obvious early fit. B2B sellers should watch this roll forward, not build around it today.

What to actually do with this if you sell on Shopify

Three moves, in order of effort. First, if you're already running ChatGPT Ads or considering it, install the Shopify app and stop maintaining a separate export for that channel. It's free and it removes a manual step you were probably skipping anyway. Second, don't chase a Sponsored Agent slot. It's not self-serve, the advertiser list is two companies deep, and the categories that make sense (high-consideration, question-heavy purchases) are narrow. Third, if the AI-suggested copy and auto-translation features tempt you to skip a human review pass, don't. That's exactly the corner Google and Meta's AI creative tools have been quietly encouraging advertisers to cut for two years, and it shows up as brand-voice drift long before anyone notices it in the metrics.

This is also a genuinely good moment to check whether your Shopify product data is worth feeding into any AI-driven channel at all. We audited our own stores' structured data earlier this year and found gaps most merchants have never looked for: missing review schema, thin product descriptions, nothing an AI agent could use to answer a real follow-up question. A new ad surface built on top of your existing catalog data is only as good as that catalog data. If it's thin, the agent answering for you will be too.

None of this is a reason to wait on the sidelines. It's a reason to get the unglamorous parts right before you turn a new channel loose on customers. We run the ad creative pipeline for a handful of accounts already, and the work that actually moves numbers is rarely the platform integration. It's writing copy that says something true about the product, keeping it current when the catalog changes, and being the person who catches it when an AI-suggested headline drifts from what the business actually sells. OpenAI built the plumbing this week. Somebody still has to own what runs through it.
